Become a Registered Member of the Parish
Becoming a registered member of the parish is a very simple process. If you are a baptized Catholic, you simply need to contact the parish office at 755-5244. Most of the basic information can be done over the phone. You do need to live in the area in order to be registered here. Also, you need to register when you reach adulthood. (A rule of thumb: if you are no longer covered by your parents’ health insurance, you are not covered by your parents’ parish registration either—it’s part of growing up!) It would also be a courtesy to inform your previous parish that you are joining a new one.
Arrange a Baptism
The baptism of a child begins with the active participation of at least one parent in the Catholic Church. In the baptism of children, the parents and godparents respond often that they intend to raise the child in the Catholic Church. The parents are the first teachers of their children in the faith. They need to be active participants in the Church to do that.
The parent(s) of the child need to be registered member(s) of St. Michael’s. If you live elsewhere but would like to have a child baptized here (having lots of family in the area is often a reason), you need to be a registered member in the parish that you regularly attend. You would also need to provide a letter from your pastor giving the priest or deacon here permission to do the baptism.
First-time parents need to attend a special baptism preparation session prior to scheduling a baptism. This session covers the ritual, the meanings, and the expectations of parents as they relate to baptism. This session is not an expectation for the baptism of more children at a later time.
To schedule the baptism, contact the parish office and request to visit with the priest/deacon. You might want to think ahead about whether you would like to celebrate the baptism during a Mass or after a Mass. Both are permitted. The only exception is that no baptisms should be done during Mass during Advent or Lent.
Arrange a Wedding at St. Michael's
Preparations for getting married at St. Michaels’s need to begin at least six months prior to the date of the wedding. You may be married at St. Michael’s if you are a registered member here or if you are a registered member elsewhere but want to get married here (roots are often the reason for such requests).
To begin the process, call the office and request to talk with the priest/deacon. We want to help you through both the marriage-preparation process as well as the wedding-preparation process. This includes helping you through the marriage-preparation process for an interfaith wedding which may be held in the church of the non-Catholic party. This also includes helping anyone with the annulment process, if an annulment is needed because of a previous marriage involving either party.
Arrange a Funeral
When a loved one dies, and you want to have a funeral at the church, you need to contact both the funeral home and the church. The first decision to make will be the time and place of the funeral and/or wake service. After that, the funeral home will take care of all the details except for the ritual at the church and the ritual of the wake service. The Guild is prepared to provide a luncheon after the funeral, if the family requests it. Arrangements for providing music at the funeral are made through the Church. The primary concern here at the Church is that we help you through the process. You should not have to worry about forgetting details. Taking care of those things is part of what we want to offer to you. |
